I think I might actually be a bogan

1 Mar

I must confess to enjoying a bit of anonymous bogan-bashing. There’s something about Kath & Kim and thingsboganslike.com that amuses me.

Pointing out all the obvious ‘bogan tendencies’ like mis-spelling their baby names, watching Today Tonight or placing old furniture in the front yard – I know it’s mean, but it’s not picking on specific people, so no harm done right?

Tee hee hee – that anonymous person on an internet forum called their daughter Clowee!  Aren’t I so superior?

But then I had a little self-reflective moment. You know, the type that happens when the kids are asleep or you are in the toilet alone? Hasn’t actually happened for a while.

And I realised.

I like lots of stuff that bogans like.

It’s just that every time I think of one, I think to myself – I’m such a bogan, haha! and dismiss it.

But it’s happened a lot – I’m starting to compile a list.

I think I might actually be one.

I think that once again, I’m turning into the person I used to mock. And it actually ain’t half bad.  Ain’t – hee hee, I’m such a bogan.

So I think I’m going to start a series of posts called Bogan Stuff I Love because I have so much awesome stuff to share with you guys. It will be cathartic. And it’ll make everyone else feel better about themselves.

I’m going to kick it off today with:

Instant Coffee

Everyone with a shred of culture loves a good espresso. They can name their favourite cafe, discuss roasting techniques, revel in their single origin.

I like Moccona.

If I go to a cafe, I’ll order a latte, and most of the time I’ll actually enjoy it.

But I’d be equally as happy with instant.

All my friends are into Nespresso. I think it tastes pretty good, but at close to $1 a pop, I’ll take my Moccona thanks.

I know- I’m a heathen. There’s no comparing real coffee to Moccona!

That’s true, but I don’t care about ‘real coffee’. I like to drink Moccona.

Maybe they should stop calling it instant ‘coffee’. Then bogans like me won’t get a complex.

So, anyone else out there willing to own up to liking instant?

Nah – Nespresso is so over-rated… I’m an instant girl… less waste, faster and silent (no whirring of gadgetry)… hubby wanted me to buy one of those machines from Aldi when they were selling them and then all those little tubs of coffee that come with it… nope… I’ll save those for the cafes… I mean that’s what they are for aren’t they? I have to admit though, I did on a whim buy a manual coffee grinder from Vinnies but I’ve never really used it… I may bring it out now that you mentioned it… and grind ‘real’ coffee 🙂

    I’m a Nescafe girl.
    Three cups every morning.

What a great idea for a series of blog posts. I am looking forward to them.
I used to drink Moccona, but my husband didn’t like it, so I stopped buying it and I’ve always been more of a tea drinker. I do have my coffee machine now though and make my own lattes. What does that make me?
    Great post.

      Sensible.

I’m not sure drinking nespresso is particularly refined. It’s just popping a pod into a machine! Anyone can do it!

The problem I have is I don’t know a ‘good’ coffee from a mediocre or bad one. There’s been many a time when I’ve been at a cafe with a friend or my mother-in-law where they will take a sip of their cap or latte and say ‘this is good coffee’ or ‘that was burnt’ with unwavering conviction. I will usually politely agree as I am too ashamed to admit that my palate is not sufficiently refined to tell the difference.

My partner likes instant coffee too, as a result I have the occasional flirt with bogandom. I have a cup once in a while and quite enjoy it, so I have another whereupon I realise its actually quite vile and I quickly return to a more snoblike approach to caffeine.

Seeing as I’m the only person in the house who drinks coffee, it’s usually instant. In fact, I’m drinking a cup of Moccona Espresso now! I like the idea of the pod machines, though, because they’re easy and clean, and cheaper than the coffee shop.

Also drinking Moccona as I type! I don’t mind instant, but I’ll admit that it is mostly because it’s less effort to make and I am rather lazy. ‘Real’ stuff isn’t always better. I have to say that the current bag of coffee beans my real-coffee-only-husband has doesn’t actually taste better than my instant, but some varieties definitely are better and a ‘proper’ coffee from a nice cafe is almost always better to me than instant. Not to mention the fancy coffee. Don’t let me near a cafe that serves Affogato!

Is Moccona really bogan though? I’d have thought you’d have to drink something like International Roast or homebrand Coles Instant coffee…???

International Roast I associate with sporting teams and motor inns. Nescafe – now there is a bogan coffee.

I think the ultimate bogan coffee is the Nescafé Vanilla Latte – fake frothy milk in all its horrible aftertasty goodness 😉

But I should watch what I say- stones, glass houses and all that. Just you wait – there’s some truly horrid bogan stuff I love 🙂

I’m guilty of stocking those Nescafe “Cappucino” and “Latte” sachets 😉 I’m not really drinking coffee at the moment, and at least they stay fresh longer. (That’s my excuse, and you can’t prove otherwise!)
These days, I’m more of a tea snob. I don’t know whether that makes me a bogan or my grandmother 🙂

Sorry, from Sara. Apparently your blog thinks I’m important enough to be recognised by a single initial 😉

I had never drunk instant coffee until I came
to Australia. I hate it so : me 1, Bogans 0.
BUT I have old furniture on front veranda (I’d
have it in the yard if there was room). And
one of our cats uses an old beer carton as a
    bed. Uh oh…

I’m only part bogan. I am a coffee snob who who has old furniture on the vernadah. Not quite in the front yard.

But I will be vigilant to identify other bogan behaviours and will report.
